Xiaomi's new foldable is off to a solid start. The Xiaomi 18 Fold sold about 39,700 units in China between September 7 and September 13, according to figures shared by market-tracking blogger RD Observation and reported by IT House on September 25.
That's a strong number for a foldable in its first week, especially since the phone only went on sale on September 10, meaning most of those sales came in just four days.
Launch and Price
The Xiaomi 18 Fold was announced on September 7 and went on sale at 10:00 on September 10. It starts at 10,999 yuan in China, and its main color is a red finish Xiaomi calls "Nishino Red".
The first-week numbers also come just weeks before Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, goes on sale on October 23, starting at 15,999 yuan in China. That puts the Xiaomi 18 Fold about 5,000 yuan cheaper than Apple's rival.
Specs
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is a book-style foldable that opens up like a small tablet. Here's what you get:
- Screens: a 5.38-inch outer screen and a 7.58-inch inner screen, both with a roughly √2:1 aspect ratio, the same shape as a sheet of A4 paper, and an LTPO 1–120Hz refresh rate that adjusts to save battery
- Chip: Xiaomi's own XRING O3 (Xuanjie O3), its first appearance in a phone, with a 10-core CPU and a 16-core G2-Ultra NX GPU
- Memory: the first phone to use CXMT's LPDDR6 RAM, a newer, faster type of phone memory
- Battery: 6,000mAh, using Xiaomi's Jinsha River battery technology
- Charging: 67W wired and 50W wireless fast charging
The XRING O3 chip is the headline here. Xiaomi has been building its own chips to rely less on Qualcomm and MediaTek, and the 18 Fold is the first phone to use this one. That A4-paper screen shape is also worth noting. It's wider than most foldables, which should make documents, e-books and split-screen apps look more natural.
What's Next
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is only available in China for now, and Xiaomi hasn't confirmed a global launch. With the iPhone Duo arriving next month, the foldable market is about to get a lot more competitive, and these early sales suggest Xiaomi is well positioned going into that fight.
