iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Xiaomi 18 Pro Max: Which Flagship Should You Buy?

Should you spend big on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, or does the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max give you more phone for less money? Both landed in September, both carry 6.9-inch screens, and both run on brand-new 2nm chips, but they go about being a flagship in two very different ways.

I've followed both Apple and Xiaomi for a long time, and this year Xiaomi came to fight. In today's comparison, we'll be looking at the iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Xiaomi 18 Pro Max to see which one is the better flagship to buy right now. Here's what we'll cover: price, design and display, performance, camera, battery and charging, and software.

Price

First off, the money. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for 256GB, or $54.12 a month over 24 months. Here in Nigeria, the 256GB model goes for ₦2,650,000.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max launched in China first, and the pricing is aggressive. You get:

• 16GB RAM + 512GB: ¥8,999, about $1,343

That's roughly $250 less for the Xiaomi at the same 256GB storage, and you also get more RAM. Of course, those are China prices. Xiaomi has confirmed a global launch later this year, and global prices are usually higher. When it lands in Nigeria, expect import markups just like the iPhone. For now, the iPhone is the one you can actually walk into a store in Lagos and buy.

Design and Display

Both phones use a 6.9-inch screen, so neither one is small. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max features a flat OLED panel with super-thin 0.99mm bezels, a 1–120Hz refresh rate, and up to 4,000 nits of brightness. Refresh rate is how many times the screen updates per second, so 120Hz means super smooth scrolling. And 4,000 nits is bright enough to read your messages under the Lagos afternoon sun without squinting.

Then there's the party trick. This one has a 2.9-inch OLED screen on the back, also at 120Hz and 4,000 nits. You can use it to check notifications, control music, or take selfies with the main 200MP camera. It's not something you need, but it's fun.

The Xiaomi is also tough. It carries IP66, IP68 and IP69 ratings, which means it's protected against dust, rain, being dropped in water, and even high-pressure water jets. It weighs 235 grams, though, and you'll feel that in your pocket.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max keeps Apple's familiar design, now with a smaller Dynamic Island that can show three Live Activities at once, like your Bolt ride, a football score and your music. It comes in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, and the Burgundy one is a looker. In a nutshell, the Xiaomi has the brighter, more feature-packed display, while the iPhone has the cleaner, more premium feel.

Performance

Both phones are very fast. The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Apple's A20 Pro chip, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, which handles AI tasks. Apple says the GPU is up to 40% faster than last year's A19 Pro, and for gaming, that's a big jump.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage, one of the fastest types of phone storage available. Xiaomi also added a large circular cooling system to keep it from slowing down during long gaming sessions.

To be honest, you won't feel much difference in everyday use. WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Call of Duty will all fly on either phone. Regardless, the iPhone will likely age better over the years because of how long Apple supports its phones.

Camera

This is where things get interesting. On paper, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is a monster. You get a Leica-tuned 200MP main camera with a big 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 200MP periscope telephoto with 3.2x optical zoom and up to 12.8x lossless zoom, and a 50MP ultrawide. A periscope camera uses a folded lens to zoom in without making the phone thicker.

That 200MP telephoto is the headline. It means zoomed shots at a concert or across the street keep far more detail than you'd expect.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max goes a different route. It uses a 48MP main camera, but the big news is the variable aperture, which runs from f/1.48 to f/4. At f/1.48, it pulls in more light for night shots. At f/4, it keeps a whole group of friends sharp in one photo. You also get new manual controls for aperture and shutter speed, which content creators will enjoy.

On the other hand, the iPhone is still the phone to beat for video. If you shoot YouTube content, reels or skits, iPhone footage is consistent and easy to edit. Either way, the Xiaomi wins for photos and zoom, and the iPhone wins for video.

Battery and Charging

This one isn't close. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max packs an 8,500mAh silicon-carbon battery, a newer battery type that fits more capacity into the same space. It supports 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 27W reverse charging, so you can top up your earbuds from the phone.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max has the best battery life of any iPhone yet. Apple rates it at up to 30 hours of typical use, and up to 45 hours of video playback on the eSIM-only model. Five minutes of charging gets you about seven hours of video, and MagSafe wireless charging gets you to 50% in 30 minutes.

That's great for an iPhone. Regardless, it can't match 100W wired charging on a much bigger battery. With NEPA being NEPA, faster charging matters a lot here, and the Xiaomi clearly wins this round.

Software and Updates

The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs iOS, and that's still a big reason people buy iPhones. It's smooth, secure, gets years of updates, and works seamlessly with AirPods, Apple Watch and Mac.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max runs HyperOS 4, Xiaomi's new "Alive Design" interface, with Super XiaoAI 2.0 and a customizable AI button. HyperOS is feature-rich, but it can feel busy, and the global version may come with some preinstalled apps.

Also keep resale value in mind. In Nigeria, a used iPhone holds its value far better than any Android flagship. When you upgrade in two years, the iPhone will get you a much better swap deal.
