Apple Watch Series 12: Here’s What the New Health Sensing System Actually Does

Ever wondered if your smartwatch really knows what’s going on with your body? With the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple says the answer is finally yes, thanks to its all-new Health Sensing System.

I’ve been a fan of the Apple Watch for a while now, especially for fitness tracking. Apple announced the Series 12 on September 9, and it’s been in stores since September 18. In today’s post, we’ll be looking at the new Health Sensing System to see what it actually does for you. Here’s what we’ll cover: the new sensors, what it tracks, the Readiness score, design, battery life, and price.

The New Sensors

Apple has redesigned the sensors on the back of the watch. You get new optical and electrical heart sensors, plus bigger green LEDs that use less power. Apple says it’s the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, based on its own study with over 1,000 people. Of course, that’s Apple’s own claim.

What It Tracks

  • Your heart rate every 5 seconds, all day
  • HRV (heart rate variability, which shows how well your body is recovering) up to 24 times more often
  • Two types of HRV: Recovery HRV and Overall HRV
  • Daytime and overnight vitals
  • Better step tracking

The Readiness Score

This is my favorite new feature. Every day, you get a Readiness score from 0 to 10, with tips on how hard to push yourself. That aside, it’s not perfect. In one 10-day test, TechRadar noticed a reading that was slightly off.

Design

The Series 12 runs on the new S11 chip and comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes. You can pick aluminum, titanium or a brand-new ceramic finish in Pearl White and Night Blue. To be honest, the ceramic Pearl White looks classy.

Battery Life

Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life. A 15-minute charge gives you about 12 hours of use, which is great if you forget to charge overnight.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Heart rate checked every 5 seconds
  • Much more detailed recovery tracking with two HRV types
  • New Readiness score with daily tips
  • New ceramic finish
  • Fast charging: 12 hours from 15 minutes

Cons

  • Battery life is still about a day
  • Needs an iPhone 11 or newer on iOS 27
  • No official Apple sales in Nigeria

Price

The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, which is around ₦553,000. It’s already on sale in the US and over 50 other countries. Apple doesn’t sell officially in Nigeria, so expect local sellers to charge more.

Finally, should you get the Apple Watch Series 12? Here’s my verdict.

If you care about your health and fitness, this is the most complete Apple Watch yet. On the other hand, if you already own a Series 10 or Series 11 and just use it for notifications, you won’t miss much by waiting.
