Redmi 17C 5G vs HMD Vibe 2 Pro: Which Budget 5G Phone Wins?

Can you really get a good 5G phone for under ₦300,000 in 2026? Xiaomi and HMD both think so, and they’ve dropped two budget phones within days of each other that look almost like twins on paper.

I’ve been a fan of Redmi’s C-series for a while now because it has always given budget buyers big screens and big batteries for little money. HMD, the company that makes Nokia phones these days, has also been pushing hard in the budget space with its own brand. The HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G launched in India on September 29, 2026, and the Redmi 17C 5G, which first launched in Singapore in late August, is set for India on October 1.

In today’s post, we’ll be looking at the Redmi 17C 5G and the HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G to see which one gives you more for your money. Here’s what we’ll cover: design and durability, display, performance, cameras, battery life and charging, software, and price in Nigeria.

Design and Durability

First off, both phones are big. The Redmi 17C 5G weighs 211g and is 8.05mm thick, and HMD hasn’t shared the Vibe 2 Pro’s weight or thickness in the launch coverage I’ve seen.

Where the Redmi pulls ahead is protection. It has an IP64 rating (dust-tight and protected from splashes, but not for dunking in water) plus Xiaomi’s Wet Touch 2.0, which helps the screen work when your fingers are wet. None of the launch reports for the HMD Vibe 2 Pro mention an IP rating at all, so I’d treat it as having no official water resistance until HMD says otherwise.

The Vibe 2 Pro comes in Silver Mist, Aqua Green and Cosmic Purple. Both phones keep the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I like, because not everybody wants to buy wireless earbuds just to listen to Afrobeats on the way to work.

Display

The Redmi 17C 5G has the bigger screen at 6.9 inches, but it’s an HD+ LCD (1600 x 720) with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 810 nits peak brightness.

The HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G has a slightly smaller 6.78-inch LCD, but it’s Full HD+, also at 120Hz. That means text and videos should look noticeably sharper on the HMD, especially for YouTube and Netflix. HMD hasn’t shared a brightness figure.

To be honest, this is one of the biggest differences between the two. If you watch a lot of videos on your phone, the HMD’s sharper screen is a real advantage.

Performance

Here’s where they really are twins. Both phones use the MediaTek Dimensity 6300, a 6nm 5G chip that’s common in budget phones. It’s fine for WhatsApp, social media, YouTube and light gaming, but don’t expect it to run heavy games at high settings.

The HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G comes with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Redmi 17C 5G launched in Singapore with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, expandable with a microSD card up to 1TB, and Xiaomi says it goes up to 8GB with memory extension (which borrows some storage to act as extra RAM). We’ll know the exact Indian configurations after October 1.

On paper, the HMD’s extra physical RAM should help if you keep many apps open at once.

Cameras

The HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G has a 64MP Sony IMX682 main camera, plus a 2MP macro camera (for extreme close-ups) and a 13MP selfie camera.

The Redmi 17C 5G has a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture and an auxiliary lens, plus an 8MP selfie camera in a waterdrop notch.

I haven’t used either phone, so I can’t tell you which takes better pictures. Regardless, on paper the HMD has the edge, especially for selfies, with 13MP against 8MP.

Battery Life and Charging

Another tie here. Both phones have a 6,000mAh battery and support 33W charging.

There’s a catch on the Redmi side, though. Xiaomi’s global product page says only a 15W adapter comes in the box, and the 33W charger is sold separately. HMD’s launch coverage doesn’t say what charger comes in the box, so check before you buy.

Either way, 6,000mAh is a lot of battery for a budget phone, and either one should comfortably get most people through a full day of light use, even with a few hours of NEPA wahala.

Software and Updates

The Redmi 17C 5G runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3, based on Android 16, and Xiaomi promises a “48-month like-new software experience.” It also has NFC and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G ships with Android 16 and two years of security updates, with no Android version upgrades promised. It also comes with Indus AI by Sarvam, an assistant that supports 22+ Indian languages, which won’t mean much for Nigerian buyers. On the other hand, it has dual stereo speakers, which is a nice touch at this price.

In a nutshell, Xiaomi is promising longer software support.

  • 64MP Sony main camera and 13MP selfie camera
  • 6GB or 8GB of RAM
  • Dual stereo speakers

Price in Nigeria

Neither phone has an official Nigerian price yet.

The HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G costs ₹15,999 (6GB/128GB) and ₹17,999 (8GB/128GB) in India, which is around ₦231,000 and ₦259,000 at ₦1,385 to the dollar (using ₹96.1 to $1). With India’s launch offer, it drops to ₹14,999 and ₹16,999, around ₦216,000 and ₦245,000. It goes on sale on Flipkart on October 8. HMD phones like the HMD Arc and HMD Pulse+ are already on Jumia Nigeria, but the Vibe 2 Pro isn’t listed yet.

The Redmi 17C 5G launched in Singapore at S$279 for 4GB/128GB, which is about $196, or around ₦271,000. Indian pricing will be announced on October 1. It isn’t on Jumia Nigeria yet either, though its 4G predecessor, the Redmi 15C, sells there from about ₦167,000.

Finally, which one should you get? Here’s my verdict.

If you care more about the screen and cameras, the HMD Vibe 2 Pro 5G looks like the better phone on paper. The Full HD+ display, 64MP Sony camera, 13MP selfie camera and stereo speakers make it the better choice for watching videos and taking selfies, and going by the Indian and Singapore prices so far, it could end up a bit cheaper too.

On the other hand, if you want a phone that will survive rain, dust and a few years of use, I’d lean towards the Redmi 17C 5G for its IP64 rating and longer software support. My advice: wait for official Nigerian prices before buying either one, because a grey-market import at a big markup would kill the value of both.
