OnePlus 16 vs Xiaomi 18 Pro: Which Flagship Should You Buy?
Oct 1, 2026 • Sam for DailyTechPrices • Phones
Should you go for the phone that’s already out, or wait a couple of weeks for the one everybody is hyping? That’s the question a lot of people are asking with the Xiaomi 18 Pro and the OnePlus 16.
I’ve been a fan of both OnePlus and Xiaomi flagships for a while now, and to be honest, they’ve always fought for the same buyer: someone who wants top performance and great cameras without paying Samsung or Apple money. The Xiaomi 18 Pro launched in China on September 23, 2026, and the OnePlus 16 is set to launch in China on October 12, 2026. Both are among the first phones with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family.
Since the OnePlus 16 isn’t out yet, I’ll be clear about what OnePlus has confirmed and what’s still a leak. In today’s post, we’ll be looking at the OnePlus 16 and the Xiaomi 18 Pro to see which one makes more sense. Here’s what we’ll cover: design and display, performance, cameras, battery life and charging, availability, and price in Nigeria.
Design and Display
This is where the two phones take very different paths.
The Xiaomi 18 Pro has a compact 6.4-inch AMOLED screen (2436 x 1120) at 120Hz with up to 4,000 nits peak brightness. The headline feature, though, is on the back: a 2.7-inch rear screen that also runs at 120Hz. On top of that, Xiaomi added a privacy screen feature, which 9to5Google describes as Xiaomi’s take on Samsung’s Privacy Display. According to the outlet, it uses the front camera to detect people looking over your shoulder and turns the privacy mode on automatically, and it can also switch on by location, like when you’re in a crowded place. If you’ve ever typed your bank PIN in a packed BRT bus, you’ll understand why that matters. The 18 Pro weighs 203g and carries IP66/IP68/IP69 water and dust ratings.
The OnePlus 16 is all about speed. OnePlus has confirmed a 185Hz refresh rate in games, with native 185fps support in select titles, and 165Hz across the rest of the system. For context, most flagships stop at 120Hz. OnePlus hasn’t officially confirmed the screen size yet; leaks point to a 6.78-inch 1.5K OLED panel. There’s no rear screen here.

Performance
The Xiaomi 18 Pro runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, built on a 2nm process, with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB to 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage. Now, here’s something a lot of headlines miss: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, Qualcomm’s even faster version, is only in the bigger Xiaomi 18 Pro Max, not the 18 Pro.
On the OnePlus side, OnePlus has confirmed a next-generation Snapdragon flagship chip, and several reports, including Nokiamob, say it’s the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. 91mobiles, on the other hand, still treats the Extreme label as unconfirmed, based on an AnTuTu listing scoring over 5.38 million. Either way, OnePlus has confirmed a new Fengchi gaming kernel and a three-chip e-sports system that handles networking, touch and display.
In a nutshell, if the Extreme chip is confirmed on October 12, the OnePlus 16 should have the edge for gamers.
Cameras
On paper, both phones went big here.
The Xiaomi 18 Pro has a Leica-branded triple camera: a 200MP main camera with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 200MP 3.2x periscope telephoto (a zoom lens folded sideways inside the phone) and a 50MP ultrawide.
OnePlus has confirmed a 200MP main camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor, a 50MP periscope telephoto with 3x zoom, a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP autofocus selfie camera.
Of course, these phones aren’t out in Nigeria and I haven’t used either, so I can’t tell you which takes better photos. Regardless, Xiaomi’s bigger main sensor and 200MP telephoto look stronger on paper, especially for zoom.
Battery Life and Charging
The Xiaomi 18 Pro has a 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery (a newer battery type that packs more capacity into the same space) with 100W wired charging. If you want more, the 18 Pro Max goes up to 8,500mAh.
OnePlus hasn’t confirmed the OnePlus 16’s battery yet. Leaks say around 9,000mAh with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. If that’s true, it would beat both the 18 Pro and the 18 Pro Max, and for NEPA-prone Nigerians, that’s a big deal. Until OnePlus confirms it, though, treat it as a rumor.
Availability
The Xiaomi 18 Pro is on sale in China now, and reports say Xiaomi will bring its Pro models to international markets later. Xiaomi does sell phones officially in Nigeria, but there’s no Nigerian launch date for the 18 Pro yet.
The OnePlus 16 launches in China on October 12. Reports say it won’t be sold in the US or Europe, and its India launch is still unconfirmed, with some reports saying India may get a OnePlus 16R instead. OnePlus hasn’t announced anything for Nigeria, so if you want one, you’ll likely be buying an imported China unit without local warranty.

Price in Nigeria
The Xiaomi 18 Pro starts at ¥5,999 in China for 12GB/256GB, which works out to about $894, or around ₦1,239,000 at ₦1,385 to the dollar (using ¥6.71 to $1). The 12GB/512GB model is ¥6,999 (around ₦1,445,000), 16GB/512GB is ¥7,999 (around ₦1,652,000), and 16GB/1TB is ¥8,999 (around ₦1,858,000). The 18 Pro Max starts at ¥6,999, around ₦1,445,000.
OnePlus hasn’t announced a price. Smartprix reports an expected China price of ¥4,599 to ¥4,999, which would be around ₦950,000 to ₦1,032,000. Please treat that as a rumor until October 12.
Keep in mind that imported units usually sell for more than these conversions once shipping and dealer markup are added.
Finally, which one should you get? Here’s my verdict.
If you need a new flagship right now, the Xiaomi 18 Pro is the safer pick. Its specs and prices are confirmed, the privacy screen is genuinely useful, and the dual 200MP cameras look superb on paper. I like that it keeps things compact too.
On the other hand, if you’re a gamer or battery life is your biggest worry, I’d wait until October 12. If OnePlus confirms the Extreme chip, a battery around 9,000mAh and a price below Xiaomi’s, the OnePlus 16 could be the better-value phone. To be honest, with both phones being China-first, waiting a few weeks costs you nothing.
