iPhone Duo Explained: Apple’s First Foldable, Specs and Naira Price

Has Apple finally caught up with Samsung on foldables, or has it just made the most expensive iPhone ever? With the iPhone Duo, it’s a bit of both.

I’ve been waiting on a foldable iPhone for a while now, mostly because I wanted to see how Apple would handle the crease, the hinge and the price. Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, and it starts at $1,999. In today’s post, we’ll be looking at what the iPhone Duo actually is, what you get for that money, and whether it makes sense for Nigerians to buy one now or wait. Here’s what we’ll cover: design, displays, performance, cameras, battery life, how it compares to the Galaxy Z Fold8, price in Nigeria, and availability.

What is the iPhone Duo?

First off, the iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable phone. It’s a book-style foldable, which means it opens sideways like a book, the same way Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold phones do. Closed, you use it like a regular (if thick) iPhone. Open it, and you get a small tablet in your hand.

Of course, the name is a bit of a giveaway. Apple is pushing the idea of two apps side by side, and iOS 27.1 on the Duo supports Split View, so you can run two apps on the big screen at once.

Design

You get a Grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, and an IP68 rating for water and dust. Apple says the hinge is built from more than 100 components, with a magnet array that helps it snap shut.

Now, here’s the catch. The iPhone Duo is 5.2mm thin when open, which Apple calls the thinnest iPhone ever, but it’s 11.3mm thick when closed and weighs 254g. That’s heavier and thicker than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, which weighs 201g and is 9.7mm thick when folded. To be honest, that’s a noticeable difference in your pocket, especially on a long danfo ride.

It comes in two colors, Star White and Night Sky.

Displays

The inner screen is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display, and Apple says it’s the largest display ever on an iPhone. The outer screen is 5.4 inches. Both can hit up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness outdoors, which is superb for using it under the Lagos sun.

The crease is where most foldables get judged. Apple says it uses a nano-texture finish on the inner display to make the crease less visible, along with a custom polymer cover layer. I’d like to see it in person before calling it crease-free, but on paper Apple has clearly worked hard on it.

Performance

The iPhone Duo runs on the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process (a newer, more efficient way of making chips), the same chip family as the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple says it has a 6-core CPU up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro and a 7-core GPU (graphics) up to 40% faster. There’s also a vapor chamber to keep it cool.

In a nutshell, this is a flagship chip, and performance shouldn’t be a worry for anyone.

Cameras

On the back, you get two 48MP Fusion cameras: a main camera that also gives you an optical-quality 2x zoom, and a 48MP ultra-wide. There’s a Center Stage front camera on the outside, plus a hidden FaceTime camera under the inner display. Video goes up to 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision.

On the other hand, there’s no dedicated telephoto lens like you get on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, so if you love zooming far into concerts or events, this one isn’t the best camera iPhone.

Battery Life

Apple uses two batteries, one in each half, but hasn’t shared the capacity in mAh. It quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and up to 24 hours if you split your use between both. It can charge to 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W adapter, or about 30 minutes on MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging.

Also worth noting: Touch ID is built into the side button, not Face ID.

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is the closest rival. Samsung launched it with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen, which is almost the same screen setup as the iPhone Duo. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, has a 4,800mAh battery, and starts at $1,899, which is $100 less than the iPhone Duo.

Here’s how they stack up:

  • Weight: iPhone Duo 254g, Z Fold8 201g
  • Thickness closed: iPhone Duo 11.3mm, Z Fold8 9.7mm
  • Water resistance: iPhone Duo IP68, Z Fold8 IP48 (the “4” means weaker dust protection)
  • Rear cameras: iPhone Duo two 48MP cameras, Z Fold8 50MP main plus 50MP ultra-wide
  • Stylus: Apple says Apple Pencil support is coming to the Duo later in 2026, while the Z Fold8 has no S Pen support

If you want the bigger foldable experience, Samsung also sells the Z Fold8 Ultra with an 8-inch main display and a 200MP main camera, starting at $2,099.

Either way, the Z Fold8 is lighter and slimmer, while the iPhone Duo has the stronger IP68 rating and, of course, iOS.

  • A20 Pro chip, one of the fastest phone chips around
  • IP68 rating, better than the Z Fold8’s IP48
  • Strong battery claims of up to 24 hours mixed use
  • Apple Pencil support promised later in 2026

Cons

  • Very expensive at $1,999 to start
  • 254g and 11.3mm thick when closed, heavier than Samsung’s Fold
  • eSIM only worldwide, no physical SIM tray
  • No dedicated telephoto camera
  • Supply is expected to be tight at launch

Price in Nigeria

In the US, the iPhone Duo costs $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB. At ₦1,385 to the dollar, that’s around ₦2,769,000, ₦3,046,000, ₦3,600,000 and ₦4,431,000 before shipping, duty and dealer margins. Realistically, expect Nigerian shelf prices to sit above those numbers.

Pre-orders open October 16, and the phone goes on sale October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more from October 30. Nigeria isn’t among the named launch markets, so most people here will buy through Apple resellers, trusted importers, or family abroad, for example from the UAE, where it starts at AED 8,499.

Supply is the other problem. Analyst Jeff Pu expects only about 6 million iPhone Duo units to ship in 2026, down from 7 million, because of hinge production constraints. That’s a report, not an Apple figure, but it suggests early stock will be scarce and grey-market prices in Computer Village could be inflated.

One more thing: the iPhone Duo is eSIM only. MTN Nigeria supports eSIM, and other networks like Airtel and Glo also offer it, so you’ll need to convert your line before switching.

Finally, should you get the iPhone Duo? Here’s my verdict.

If you’re deep in Apple’s world and you’ve always wanted a phone that turns into a mini iPad, the iPhone Duo is nothing short of impressive on paper, and it’s the most exciting iPhone in years. That said, for most Nigerians, I’d wait. First-generation foldables usually improve a lot in their second year, early stock is expected to be tight, and the naira price will likely be well above ₦2.8 million at launch.

If you need a foldable right now, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is lighter, cheaper and already out. If you want the iPhone Duo specifically, give it a few months for prices and supply to settle.
