If you have decided your next phone should be a Google Pixel, the next decision is how far your budget should go.

You could spend less on a used Pixel 7a, compare new and used Pixel 8 options, or move up to a Pixel 9. Each choice involves a different amount of money, and the newer model is not automatically the right one for everyone.

Pixel 7a: Starting With a Smaller Budget

The Pixel 7a is the lowest-priced option in this shortlist. If the other models would push you beyond your budget, it gives you somewhere to start.

However, the support period deserves attention. Google includes the 7a in its five-year OS and security update policy, counted from the model’s original availability.

That means buying a used unit now does not give you a fresh five years of updates.

It is not necessarily a reason to reject the phone, but it matters if you intend to keep your next device for a long time.

Pixel 8: A More Interesting Middle Option

The Pixel 8 is where the comparison becomes more balanced. There are new and UK-used options, and the quoted prices sit below the Pixel 9.

Google also promises seven years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 8 and later models, starting from their original availability.

That gives the Pixel 8 a useful long-term argument. If you can comfortably afford the difference over a 7a, the remaining support period is worth including in the decision.

Personally, this is the first model I would compare closely from this list. That is a buying preference, though—not a reason to overlook the condition of a particular unit.

Pixel 9: Decide Whether the Extra Spend Suits You

The Pixel 9 requires a larger budget in both new and UK-used form.

If it is the model you genuinely want, compare the exact storage and condition rather than choosing the first offer within reach. The difference between new and used is substantial enough to deserve some thought.

A new unit may appeal if you want to avoid another owner’s usage history. A used one may leave more room in your budget. In either case, establish the warranty and return arrangements before payment.

Test Your SIM Before Buying

For a Pixel purchase, this is an important step.

Google explains that a device must be SIM-unlocked to use another carrier, while 5G compatibility depends on the model and network.

Insert the SIM you intend to use, make a call and test mobile data with Wi-Fi switched off. Check hotspot sharing too if that is part of your daily routine.

If you need a normal everyday phone, a “Wi-Fi-only” device is not an equivalent option at a lower price.

What to Check on a UK-Used Pixel

Start with the screen, then work through the cameras, speakers, microphone, fingerprint reader and charging port.

Ask about repairs and watch for unexpected restarts or unusual battery behaviour during inspection. Also have the seller remove their Google account and demonstrate that the phone can complete setup after a reset.

Warranty support can depend on the purchase region and seller, so ask who will actually handle a fault. Do not assume every imported unit comes with convenient local manufacturer support.

Which Pixel Should You Choose?

The 7a is worth comparing when the budget is tighter. The Pixel 8 offers a useful middle ground, while the Pixel 9 is for someone comfortable spending more.

There is no need to force the most expensive option. A healthy, unlocked phone with enough storage and clear after-sales terms is a better starting point than a bargain you cannot properly use.
